The best ideas are born of need, to paraphrase the old proverb. In this case, a chilly winter walk hand-in-hand with my son left my hand cramped from trying to keep a hold of his little fingers through the thickness of my mitten and his. I longed for the warm days when his bare hand could wrap securely around my own. Looking down the long tunnel of Canadian winter, my needles took countermeasures, and this hand-holding mitten was born.

The large cuff at one end lets the adult’s hand in, while the small cuff at the other keeps the mitten snug around the child’s. The two can meet in the middle for that comforting, no-slip, skin-to-skin grip that the mitten will keep safe from the elements. The thematic elephant motif ensures the height of cuteness while you stroll. Because after all, Necessity is a mother herself.

Pattern is written and charted, but relies on chart for colourwork section. Mitten is worked in the round starting with adult cuff. Full list of abbreviations and links to learning resources included in pattern. One size.

Tools & Materials

• Yarn: Worsted weight (Cascade 220 Superwash, 100g = 220 yds/ 200m)
• Needles: US Size 4 - 3.5 mm, set of 4 or 5 dpns
  
• Gauge: 24 sts & 25 rows = 4”/10 cm in colourwork pattern, blocked; 
  23 sts & 26 rows = 4”/10 cm in Stockinette Stitch, unblocked.
