The Tunis sheep is a North American heritage breed. Once a favourite for wool and meat in the late 18th century, ancestors of North American Tunis were imported from Tunisia to the United States in 1799. Today they are very rare, but valued for their genetics which contribute to calmer, more handle-able flocks.
These gentle russet-faced animals produce a lofty, cream-coloured, medium wool with a tight crimp. Our wool is grown by the trio of Tunis wethers in our little flock - Jamie, Woolliam, and Bobby. We skirt our fleece carefully to remove most of the vegetation that they accumulate while in winter housing. We then wash the wool thoroughly to remove the dirt and oils (lanolin). The wool is washed gently, without harsh detergents. The wool is ready to be prepared for spinning by carding or combing, or for use in all your other fibre crafts.
