The Romney sheep is an English longwool breed dating from the Middle Ages. They are a dual purpose breed for wool and meat, and their fleece is beloved by spinners for its ease of spinning, crimp and lustre.
Our black and white fleece is grown by Ombré our "fancy" wether. His fleece ranges from black to very light grey. We skirt our fleece carefully to remove most of the vegetation that Ombré accumulates while in winter housing. We then wash the wool thoroughly to remove the dirt and oils (lanolin). The wool is washed gently, without harsh detergents. The wool is ready to be prepared for spinning by carding or combing, or for use in all your other fibre crafts. You can see Ombré's fleece processed into roving here, also available for purchase.
